Results

Did you know that the digital sector represents 4% the total amount of CO2 emitted – twice as much as air transport emissions? Or that the famous Gangnam style video has been watched over 2.7 billion times, which is the equivalent of the annual energy consumption of a small nuclear plant?

By 2019, we could no longer turn a blind eye towards the issue of digital obesity. As an agency rooted in the sustainable development of technology, Bug is committed to the concept of digital eco-responsibility to showcase our philosophy and technical know-hows.

Approaches

We decided on 4 main approaches that allow us to be frugal whilst still able to bring to life the concept.

Design

The entire website is in native Dark Mode.

Not only a design trend, Dark mode has proven to be the lowest power consumption colour on the web.As light emitting from the screen, Black consumes 376 mV compared to 801 mV for White.

Content

  • Visual elements loaded on hover only to reduce unnecessary bandwidth usage.

  • Using SVG vector graphics whenever possible.

  • Replacing graphics (borders, shadows, rounded edges, gradients, geometric shapes) with CSS Effects.

  • Using Fira - a Google webfont, limited to 2 weights only

Development

  • Concatenating and minifying CSS files by combining all partials into one large CSS file that has unnecessary whitespace, comments and characters removed.

  • Using CSS Flexbox (for menus, image galleries, cards, etc.) and CSS Grid ( for page layouts).

  • Developing only the necessary functionalities and using the browser's cache function

Hosting

Carefully selecting server and hosting plan to satisfy the need of the website without leaving too much waste.

Visuals on the site were deliberately hidden and only visible on hover.

To an unsuspecting visitor this might appear to be a bug. The concept of the site is explained upon reading the captions.

As brands and new generations of consumers are highly present on social media, we created Instagram stories campaign to launch the website and raise awareness on digital eco-responsibility.

Witty wordplays juxtaposed over alarming facts brings to life the often overlooked issue of digital ecology.

Results

Reduced 50% CO2 emissions per visited pages compared to our old website by implementing technologies and making conscious decisions.

For which we were awarded the GreenTechVerte medal from the Ministry of Ecologic Transition and Solidarity for positive innovation.

This award is one step closer towards raising awareness around environmental issues and the impact of our digital ecosystems.

The website also received the GOLD label from the Greencodelabel initiative for eco-responsible development.
